Self Evaluation
It’s been a busy semester, but now it has come to an end. I have learnt so much, not only on a knowledge level, but on a technical proficiency one as well. When I started this course I had no idea how to use photoshop for painting. Now I have produced some fairly good artworks.
The animatic task was an excellent eye opener. I knew a little bit about storyboarding, but it is not until you...
Inspirational Artworks
Over the past few weeks I have been researching concept art for out art of book. I thought I would share some of my favourites. Each has a speacial feature that draws the eye right into the image.

Mike Kunkel
Another inspirational artist for me is Mike Kunkel, author of Herobear and the Kid. Looking at his fantasic character and pose design is a constant source of inspiration.

I was looking through Shaun Tan’s prize winning graphic novel ”The Arrival” the other dayand was once again inspired by his fantastical, yet realistic drawings. Check out some pieces in this link…

Gaudi
I have been researching some odd architecture this week, in the aim to help design some forest buildings. The artist / architect that impresed me the most was Spanish dude Antonio Gaudi. Some of his works can be found on the site below:

That's So Raven
We have a lot of ravens in our story, which means a lot of raven drawing. The images below are some of the inspiring ones. I particularly like the distortion found in the sculptures of Rod Bearup.

Forest Research
For ‘The 12 Brothers’ we need to design three kingdoms and a plethora of characters, mechanical and human. To come up with these designs, I have had to do some research into real worl items which I can twist into some interesting designs. I started my research with the forest kingdom, below are some images of trees and inspiring locations which I have used.
Story
Our group for the “Art of Book” task has chosen to desgn the Grimm Brothers fairy tale known as “The Twelve Brothers”. A transcript can be found here. http://www.pitt.edu/~dash/grimm009.html To update the story into one that everyone in our group was motivated to work with and design, our story is now set in a fantasy world, rather than the original setting of the story....
Animatic Boards
Finally finished my animatic, here are some of the final boards used in it.
Hag Design Ideas
For the Art of book (the 12 Brothers) we have been discussing how we can twist the story and throughout our discussions, I was inspired to draw one of the minor characters form the story, the magical old woman, aka ‘hag’.

Experementation
This week I have been feverently basting my animatic together. In order to do so I experemented with a few styles to go with. I actually like the blue one below the most, but unfortunately to maintain that style at the moment with our schedule seems impractical. But we shall see there is still one week to go!
Comic Books
I know I haven’t updated my blog recently, so I plan to overload it this week to compensate. In preparation for storyboarding the sequence for our animatic, I’ve been looking at some really distinctive comic books. Namedly Herobear and the Kid, Hellboy and Johnny the Homocidal Maniac. I hope to be able to borrow a few of the major stylistic points from these panels and transfer them...
Storyboards
So this week we were looking at storyboards. Below are my feeble attempts at storyboarding the beginings of a romantic scene. I plan to post more storyboards as the semester goes on. Wish me luck…

Dramatic Shots
This week we were charged with finding some dramatic shots from films. I turned to two of my favourites, The Incredibles and Atlantis. Both are fantastic examples of drama, mainly for their excelent colour schemes and mise en scene.
The Unnamable
So… This week we were asked to read H.P. Lovecraft’s “The Unnamable” and come up with five different designs for the monster. I’m not sure if the following are unnamable, but here was my effort… yay!
