Self Evaluation

It’s been a busy semester, but now it has come to an end. I have learnt so much, not only on a knowledge level, but on a technical proficiency one as well. When I started this course I had no idea how to use photoshop for painting. Now I have produced some fairly good artworks.

The animatic task was an excellent eye opener. I knew a little bit about storyboarding, but it is not until you get in and get your hands dirty with animatics that you really learn something. And learn I did.

The art of book task was a fantastic precursor for next years final film project. I have learnt how to work effectively in a group situation. In the beginning we had problems, and couldn’t come to an agreement over what seemed like anything. But we pulled together over shared experience in late nights and little sleep, and are now working very effectively. Like a well oiled machine.

Life drawing has been excellent to keep the drawing skills going. It is amazing on how much you loose when you don’t draw properly for a week. Plus I have learned how to draw things like fabric properly and animals with a mind for animation.

Overall, this semester has been an excellent and inspiring excersise in pre-production. I am hoping to continue to further my abilities in this area in the future.

Mike Kunkel

Another inspirational artist for me is Mike Kunkel, author of Herobear and the Kid. Looking at his fantasic character and pose design is a constant source of inspiration.

Shaun Tan

I was looking through Shaun Tan’s prize winning graphic novel ”The Arrival” the other dayand was once again inspired by his fantastical, yet realistic drawings. Check out some pieces in this link…

Gaudi

I have been researching some odd architecture this week, in the aim to help design some forest buildings. The artist / architect that impresed me the most was Spanish dude Antonio Gaudi. Some of his works can be found on the site below:

PS for some bizarre reason the images I have posted on this blog aren’t appearing on the uni computers everyday. If you haven’t seen them imagine the brilliance of my research, but Iwill endeavour to link you to images from now on.

That’s So Raven

We have a lot of ravens in our story, which means a lot of raven drawing. The images below are some of the inspiring ones. I particularly like the distortion found in the sculptures of Rod Bearup.
